Reflections on building a specialized SaaS platform for one of Europe’s smallest tax jurisdictions

Andorra is one of the smallest countries in Europe. With fewer than 100,000 residents, it has its own tax legislation, unique filing requirements, and a regulatory framework whose complexity rivals that of much larger countries.

As is often the case in small jurisdictions around the world, the market is simply too small for major international software vendors to develop dedicated solutions.

For more than a decade, thousands of personal income tax returns were prepared by economists, tax advisors, accountants, and lawyers using virtually the same approach.

  • Excel spreadsheets.
  • Manual calculations.
  • Endless cross-checking.
  • And a heavy reliance on each professional’s individual expertise.

It wasn’t a matter of choice.

There simply wasn’t another option.

That was the environment in which LaCalculadora was born.

Our original goal was remarkably simple.

We wanted to digitize a process that had been carried out manually for more than a decade and enable professionals to generate complete tax calculations and official tax forms in seconds—with full traceability.

We believed we were building a tool.

And for a long time, that was exactly what consumed us.

  • Automating calculations.
  • Reducing errors.
  • Saving time.
  • Making professionals’ daily work easier.

Nothing more.

When we finished the first version of the product, we were convinced we had achieved our goal.

We had replaced spreadsheets with a cloud platform.

We believed the challenge had been solved.

But we were wrong.

Not because the software didn’t work.

Because we still hadn’t understood the real problem we were solving.

That realization didn’t happen during development.

It happened when the first professionals started using the platform.

One user found an error.

Another suggested an improvement.

Someone else identified a tax interpretation that needed to be incorporated.

We reviewed every case.

We challenged our assumptions.

We validated the solution.

Then we integrated it into the platform.

And that’s when something remarkable happened.

That improvement no longer belonged to a single firm.

It became available to everyone.

That was the moment we realized we weren’t just building software.

We were capturing knowledge.

For the first time, knowledge no longer remained locked inside a single professional or a single firm. It became a shared asset for an entire professional community.

That realization completely changed the way we understood the project.

But it also changed the way we talked about it.

For months, we had described LaCalculadora as a tool for automating tax returns.

It was true.

But it wasn’t the whole story.

Over time, we realized the market wasn’t valuing automation alone.

It was recognizing something far more valuable.

The fact that every improvement, every validated interpretation, and every lesson learned by one professional could immediately benefit everyone else.

We realized we hadn’t simply built software.

We had built a platform where professional knowledge could continuously evolve and be shared.

That was probably the most valuable lesson of the entire journey.

As entrepreneurs, we often believe we fully understand the product we’re building.

In reality, building a product and discovering its true value rarely happen at the same time.

Sometimes it’s the market itself that teaches you what problem you were really solving.

That’s exactly what happened to us.

We thought we were automating tax returns.

Today, we believe we’re helping preserve and share professional knowledge.

The difference may seem subtle.

For us, it changed everything.

It changed how we saw the product.

It changed how we explained it.

And it even changed the way we think about what specialized SaaS can become.

For a large firm, sharing knowledge across a team is relatively straightforward.

But what about the professional who works alone?

For years, every question, every interpretation of the tax code, and every mistake that was uncovered became a lesson learned by only one person.

Today, that same professional may still work alone.

But they no longer have to learn alone.

Every improvement incorporated into the platform becomes part of the shared knowledge of the entire professional community.

Every new validation.

Every new interpretation.

Every regulatory update.

Strengthens the work of the next professional who uses the platform.

Tax rules, technical interpretations, validated criteria, and accumulated professional knowledge no longer depend on a single individual.

They become part of a shared cloud platform that continuously evolves.

Our goal has never been to replace professional judgment.

Quite the opposite.

Our goal is to strengthen it.

We want professionals to spend more time analyzing, interpreting, and advising.

And less time solving problems that someone else has already solved.

Because perhaps that is the true potential of specialized software.

For years, we have measured the success of SaaS by its ability to automate processes.

We believe the next evolution will be different.

The best platforms won’t simply automate tasks.

They will capture the knowledge of an entire professional community, continuously validate it, and return it—enriched—to every member who contributes to it.

When that happens, software stops being just another tool.

It becomes infrastructure for knowledge.

That is why being shortlisted for The SaaS Awards has such special meaning for us.

Not simply because it recognizes a solution developed in one of Europe’s smallest tax jurisdictions.

But because it reinforces a conviction that emerged throughout this journey.

The future of specialized SaaS is not just about automating processes.

It is about ensuring that professional knowledge never has to start from scratch again every time someone opens a new case.

Software automates processes.

Shared knowledge transforms professions.

LaCalculadora

Specialized SaaS platform for personal income tax automation in Andorra.

LaCalculadora is a specialized SaaS platform built for tax professionals working in one of Europe’s smallest tax jurisdictions.

It automates personal income tax calculations, generates official tax forms and replaces spreadsheet-based workflows with a structured, fully traceable system.

What makes the platform different, however, is not automation alone.

Every validated improvement, tax interpretation and regulatory update becomes shared professional knowledge available to every user.

Instead of solving the same problems independently, professionals build upon a continuously evolving common knowledge base.

The result is faster preparation, greater consistency and a platform that becomes stronger with every tax season.
